  Sevici: Seville's Public Bike Service

Do you like the shiny, red bikes being pedalled along the Guadalquivir ? Want to move through Seville more quickly, but avoid the thick traffic? Become part of the public bike system in Seville and get exercise, to boot ! The first 30 minutes of any trajectory is free, so as long as you can arrive from point a to point b in 30 minutes, you only pay the basic rental fee.

If you are here for a short time, you will need to get a week (short term) pass for every week that you want to use the bike. The Short Term Pass will enable you to enjoy an  unlimited number of journeys during 7 consecutive days.

If you are here for longer than 3 months, it might be a good idea to get a long-term pass, though this takes about a month to receive the card.

The basics : Fares

First 30 minutes: Free LONG/SHORT Term
1st hour (after free 30 min.): 1 € SHORT TERM, 0.50 € LONG TERM
2nd hour+ (after free 30 min.): 2 € SHORT TERM, 1 € LONG TERM

Short-term pass (abono de corta duración):
you go to one of the bike stands. You will need an active credit card (not debit) to pass through the machine when you sign up. The credit card is used to charge you for the 5 Euros it costs to use the bikes for a week and also for the 150 Euros block on your credit card.  This works like a car rental ; for the time that you have the bike (short term, this is the full week, long term, this is whenever you take a bike) the card is blocked, but not charged, for 150 Euros. When you sign up they will ask for a PIN number that you create. When you sign up, pay attention to the instructions on the larger, color screen and on the green screen above the credit card slot. At the end of the process, you should get a ticket printed for you with a user number, that looks like the one to the left.  DO NOT LOSE THIS TICKET, or at least write down the user number somewhere in case you do!

Long-term pass (abono de larga duración):
you go on-line to www.sevici.es, go to the English page and follow the instructions for signing up.  You will be instructed to print out a letter at the end that has the credit card information, name, etc., that you entered during this process.  You must mail this to the Sevici office, and they will mail you your card in a month or so. This option is cheaper at 10 Euros a year rental fee, though it takes a while to receive the card. The 150,00 Euros deposit is still blocked on a credit card, just like when you rent a car.  In this case it is unblocked each time you return the bike.

Caveats: The system works great, but you should keep in mind that it is still new and they are some kinks. One is that you MUST be sure that the bike correctly locks into the stand when you return it. Two ways of telling this are: if the green light appears on the stand and/or if it beeps. In the case that neither of these happen, move the bike to be sure that it is really docked. If it is and there is still no sound/light, run your card through the machine to see if it shows the bike returned. If it does NOT, write down the station number and stand where you docked the bike, as well as the time, and call the 902 number on the back of your card. Tell them you returned the bike correctly and it didn´t register. They usually return any extra charges to you within 48 hours, once they can see that it was indeed docked.
